Safety and installation notes
English translation for information. The German version is legally binding.
Laser pickups and mechanisms are sensitive components. Please read these notes before installation. They protect both you and the part.
1. Electrical safety
Danger to life from electric shock. Devices connected to mains contain hazardous voltages – in the power supply even when the device is switched off.
- Always unplug the device before opening it. Switching it off is not enough.
- Capacitors in the power supply may remain charged after disconnecting from mains. Wait until they are discharged and do not touch any components of the power supply.
- Close the device completely after the repair before reconnecting it to mains. Do not remove or bypass covers, insulation or safety switches.
- Working on mains-powered devices requires expert knowledge. If in doubt, have the installation carried out by a qualified electrician or repair shop.
2. Laser radiation
Laser pickups contain a laser diode. Outside the device or with the device opened, invisible laser radiation may be emitted.
- Do not stare into the beam – not even with optical instruments (magnifier, microscope).
- Install and remove only with the device switched off and disconnected from mains.
- Operate only inside the closed device. Do not bypass safety switches or covers of the device.
- Installation should be carried out by qualified persons.
3. Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
The laser diode can be destroyed by a barely noticeable electrostatic discharge.
- Work grounded only (wrist strap, ESD mat), disconnect the device from mains.
- Keep the pickup in its protective packaging until installation and touch it only by its housing.
4. Protective solder bridge
Many pickups are supplied with a solder bridge on the flex cable that short-circuits the laser diode. Remove the solder bridge only after the pickup has been connected – and before operation. If it is not removed, the pickup will not work.
5. Settings and adjustment
- Do not touch or clean the lens, do not adjust the trimmers (laser power).
- Where the service manual requires an adjustment (e.g. laser current on older Philips mechanisms), have it carried out properly. An incorrectly set laser current can permanently damage the pickup within a short time.
- Before installation, check drive, sled, motors and supply voltages – a defective pickup is often just a symptom.
6. Service life
Laser pickups are subject to natural wear depending on use. Their service life depends mainly on the operating hours – correspondingly shorter in continuous operation (e.g. in jukeboxes). Your statutory rights in the event of defects remain unaffected.
